CDMX – Mexico City

In late 2017 and in early 2018, I traveled to Mexico City.

Today I watched Taco Chronicles on Netflix and I am inspired to come out of my blog hiatus and finally publish this email of recommendations for la Ciudad de Mexico.

The below is pulled from an email I wrote to a friend in mid-2018.

Here is the list… by neighborhood:

  • Condesa / Roma:
    • Where to Stay:

Entry way to the Hotel Villa Condesa
    • Things to Eat:
      • El Califa (map): For Tacos.  Causal.  There are a couple locations, but this one is in the Condesa neighborhood. We actually went there upon arrival and then before we left both trips.

      • Contramar (map): Favorite dished, Atun Tostadas, Pescado a la talla, fig tart for dessert if they have it.  This place as a sister restaurant in SF that I will go to again soon, but nothing beats this location.

      • Maque (map): For breakfast.  They have some really good baked goods.  Notably, the corn muffin.  We also went back before we left to buy some to take home to the states with us.

  • IMG_A023A463BDB2-1
      • Street Tamales and Atole (approximate map location): We found these carts riding around the park in the morning.  Atole is this warm corn based drink that is sweet like hot chocolate, but vanilla and cinnamony.

These dudes are totally amused with our food photography antics.

  • Centro Historico:
    • Things to Do:
      • Palacio de Bellas Artes (map):  We haven’t been, but my friend was super interested in checking this place out. Looks like there are some Diego Rivera Murals here.
      • National Palace (map): We found a very knowledgeable guide who escorted us in to talk about the Diego Rivera Murals.  He could have talked ALL DAY!
    • Things to Eat:

      • Shopping Cart Tacos (approximate location on map): Are you brave? These taco served from a literal shopping cart was recommended by our guide at the National Palace.  The chile relent taco was delicious. Salsa was hanging from buckets from the side of the cart.

  • San Angel / Coyoacán:
    • Things to Do:
      • Frida Kahlo Museum (map): Very cool home and museum.  It’s a very vibrant blue color with a lovely garden. We went both trips!
  • IMG_9301 copy.jpg
      • Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo House and Studio (map): Went the second visit. Nice place to look around this house.  Architecturally interesting.
      • Bazaar Saturday (map): We never made it!  It’s on Saturdays. It’s come highly recommended to my friend and me.
      • Coyoacan Market (map): Market place near the Frida Kahlo blue house.
    • Things to Eat:
      • El Cardenal (map): Another breakfast place that has several locations (also one near Centro Historico).  The wait can be long here.  The hot chocolate in the morning is amazing!
  • Other Noteable places:
    • Things to Do:
      • Teotihuacán (map): Archeological site with pyramids outside the city.  If you stay at the Hotel Villa Condesa, they have a tour you can book with them or find one on the internet.  When we went, I had a co-worker drive us to the site. Depending on the tour, expect this to be a day trip.  Pictures from the Pyramid of the Moon were the best!  Pyramid of the Sun is the tall one.
  • SAMSUNG CSC
    • More Food:
      • Pujol (map): FANCY! It’s #20 on the Worlds 50 Best List.  We needed reservations for dinner.  Heard there is also a lunch taco tasting menu.  I will have to check that one out next time I am there.  Also, there is a Mole dish that is so good. Watch Netflix Chefs Table (Season 2, Episode 4) if you are interested.
